Jennifer Edwards-Johnson Receives Family Medicine Teaching Award

Jennifer Edwards-Johnson, DO, headshot.Jennifer Edwards-Johnson, DO, associate professor of family medicine, associate dean for community academic programs, and community assistant dean of the Flint campus, was recently honored by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). In recognition for her excellence in teaching, mentoring and leadership in education, Edwards-Johnson received the “Excellence in Education” award at STFM’s annual conference earlier this year.

The award recognizes Edwards-Johnson’s contributions in developing innovative curricula to address crucial health disparities and primary care delivery in underserved populations.

“She has made a lasting impact by designing and co-developing several cornerstone courses,” the society said in their award announcement.

Her work on the Primary Care of Underserved Patients intersession and curricula on racism, systemic oppression, and health disparities, have been incorporated into both undergraduate and graduate medical education programs.

According to STFM, “These efforts have been essential in shaping the perspectives of future physicians to understand and address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities.” 

Edwards-Johnson has advocated for physician workforce development, health disparities, and physician debt at a federal level. She is an associate editor for Peer-Reviewed Reports in Medical Education Research (PRiMER), an open-access scholarly journal of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
